This is the winter of our high gas prices. So high, that ours isn’t on. I turned off the boiler when they announced doubling unit prices and haven’t turned it on again, since. Well, correction, I bit the bullet at Christmas when elderly relatives were visiting and turned it back off again when they’d gone.
We’re not freezing, though it’s felt like it, sometimes. I ordered a delivery of coal back in midsummer, when the price of that was at its cheapest. We have stoves in two of our rooms and an open fire in another, which we’ve kept going, mostly throughout. The washing machine heats its own water, as do the shower and dishwasher. But the tap water is cold, so that’s a bit harsh.
We’ve been burning coffee logs too. They’re nice: they burn well and make the room smell of coffee. If you heap coal on them, though, they spark ferociously and threaten to set your house on fire.
Still. At least it would be warm.
